John Allyn’s masterful retelling of the 47 ronin story has long been considered the definitive version of these dramatic historical events. They are in fact making careful plans for revenge, biding their time until the moment to strike is right! Their deeds became Japan’s most celebrated example of bravery, cunning, and loyalty in an age when samurai were heroes, and honor was worth dying for. But the ronin only seem to accept their fate. They appear to adapt to their new circumstances by becoming tradesmen and teachers. These ronin are not trusted by their enemies, and live under the watchful eyes of spies for months. His samurai retainers now become ronin, or masterless, and are dispersed. His lands are confiscated and his family is dishonored and exiled. Although the wound Asano inflicts is minimal, the Emperor’s punishment is harsh: Lord Asano is ordered to commit seppuku, or ritual suicide. In 1701 young Lord Asano is goaded into attacking a corrupt official at the Japanese Court.

I nearly called the book The Terror at one point, but people thought it sounded a bit too much like Twilight. You were originally going to call this book either Shame or Tarred and Feathered, but So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed sounds like a doctor’s self-help pamphlet. I’m showing people the consequences of their actions. Until this book, nobody has been confronted with the people that they’ve destroyed. We were reducing people to the worst thing they ever did. I spent more and more time on Twitter and I was loving punishing bad people - and then it dawned on me that we were losing our moral compass. You’ve admitted to doing a decent amount of shaming yourself. It was this jubilant tearing apart of this woman who was oblivious to the fact that she was being torn apart. I found the Justine thing especially horrific. What first attracted you to the concept of public shaming?īy the time the Justine thing happened, I think I understood something that other people hadn’t realized yet: We’ve sleepwalked into creating this surveillance society where we were tearing each other apart for nothing. In previous books like Them: Adventures With Extremists and The Men Who Stare at Goats, the journalist delved into the world of idiosyncratic, fringe elements of society. With Shamed, the call is coming from inside the house. Ronson examines all aspects of the shaming process, from the online grenade-throwers to humiliation porn stars to “reputation management” experts who can expunge your previous transgressions from Google. How was it possible for this obscure Jewish sect to become the largest religion in the world? That is the question that brings us here. A few listeners took up his invitation to follow him, and a dozen or so became his devoted disciples, but when he was executed by the Romans his followers probably numbered no more than several hundred. HE WAS A TEACHER AND miracle worker who spent nearly all of his brief ministry in the tiny and obscure province of Galilee, often preaching to outdoor gatherings. Joan moves from New York City to Los Angeles to escape the aforementioned horror that she witnesses while there. Taddeo is becoming one of those ‘read everything they’ve written’ kind of authors for me, so even though this book was just released last month, I’m already hoping she’s got another coming out soon. This novel isn’t for everyone, it embodies a certain female rage that will no doubt scare or disgust others, but I loved it. Having read Taddeo’s first book Three Women, which is also about women and their sex lives, I knew I would enjoy Animal, because she deals with many of the same themes, although this second book is different because it’s fiction. Animal by Lisa Taddeo is a novel full of violence, sex, and power struggles. We learn this in the first paragraph of the book, told bluntly by the first-person narrator and protagonist, Joan. This book begins with a suicide an aging man, obsessed with his mistress, tracks her down in a restaurant having dinner with another married man, and shoots himself in the face. |
